皆藤齋の油彩画には、毛に覆われ、マスクを被り、全身スーツを纏った人物が現れる。人間のような動物のような存在は、怪しげな雰囲気を漂いながらどこか親密な雰囲気も醸しだしている。皆藤にとって「人間である」ことは、他者に対して社会の一員であることを示す、一種の選択にほかならず、全身を覆うスーツはそのメタファーであり、傷つきやすい内側を晒さずとも他者と円滑につながるための術でもある。しかしその内側にある、他者には隠された部分を見つめ続けることでしか、人間であることの意味は保てない。また他者を自らのうちに受け入れるということは、危うさをはらんだ営みでもあるが、そうした損得を超えた有機的な結びつきの可能性――たとえそれが痛みを伴うものであっても――にこそ、人間らしい想像力の源があると考える。
作家が一貫して関心を寄せているのは、生産性や合理性から外れた行為ほど、かえってその人らしさを浮かび上がらせるという逆説だ。神話や博物館の収蔵品といった、人類が積み重ねてきた「意味のシステム」を参照しながら、自身の経験や心理を一種の私的神話として再構築し、それを絵画へと置き換えていく。そこに描かれるのは、個人の内なる欲望と、他者と共に生きる社会的な生との間で揺れ動く、誰もが抱えうる葛藤である。
In KAITO Itsuki’s oil paintings, figures appear covered in fur, wearing masks, and clad in full-body suits. These human-like yet animal-like beings exude a suspicious air while somehow also evoking a sense of intimacy. For KAITO, “being human” is nothing other than a choice to demonstrate to others that one is a member of society; the suit covering the entire body serves as a metaphor for this, as well as a means to connect smoothly with others without exposing one’s vulnerable interior. Yet, the meaning of being human can only be maintained by continually gazing at the hidden parts inside that remain concealed from others. Furthermore, accepting others within oneself is an endeavor fraught with peril; however, Kaito believes that the source of human imagination lies precisely in the possibility of such organic connections beyond profit and loss, even if they come with pain.
The artist’s consistent interest lies in the paradox that actions straying from productivity and rationality are the very ones that bring out a person’s true individuality. Referring to the “systems of meaning” accumulated by humanity, such as myths and museum collections, Kaito reconstructs personal experiences and psychology as a form of private mythology, translating them onto canvas. What is depicted there is a conflict that anyone might harbor, wavering between an individual’s inner desires and a social life shared with others.
